This post is way off topic today, but I wanted to respond to an email I received yesterday. A chap from Sydney, Australia emailed me to say how much he liked the blog and to ask how to get involved in the blogosphere. I sent him a quick email in response, but then decided that this information maybe useful to a wider audience.
What Is Blogging?
Put simply, a blog is an online journal of your thoughts, ideas and indeed any other content you want to add. I use it to capture my own thoughts on business continuity and related practices. The great thing about a blog is that once people have read your posts then they can add their own comments. They may also choose to pick up on your post on their own blog. So if you think you have something to say or want to respond to what someone else is saying then a blog is the very thing for you.
Once I’ve Started How Will People Find My Blog
The key to the blogosphere is a system called RSS (Rich Site Summary). You don’t have to worry about the technicalities of this though, it is all handled by your blogging software. Simply put, RSS is a special file which is located on your blog that summarises all the posts you have made. It is machine readable and can be picked up by blog readers like Google Reader. Everytime you update your blog, anyone who is subscribed to your RSS Feed will be notified that new content is available.
So How Do I Start Blogging
There are number of free services which will allow you quickly get started without the need to setup any software. I would advise that you take a look at.
Just choose one, register and start blogging.
Some Final Advice
I only have two key pieces of advice. Try to blog on a regular basis by aiming for at least 3 times a week. Remember that these aren’t long articles you are writing so keep things short and pithy. Finally, join in with other blogs in your subject area. Comment on blogs you are interested in or provide your own view on your own blog and link back.
