Want A Better Plan Get A Better Process

I do love Google Reader and the random things you find to inspire and delight. Today I discovered the following image, which captures the essence of a subject I have written about before. So here is yet another riff on KISS, but from an ever so slightly different angle.

I love this slide, and much kudos to Kathy Sierra for making it. Find out more about her ideas at her Creating Passionate Users blog.

Like me you probably deliver some form of information product and that product has users that you need to be passionate about. I’m sure we’ve all been in the position where we castigated our clients, work mates and peers for not instantly understanding our deep and meaningful insights. Unfortunately … it’s not them … it’s us. We’ve all seen the results, the over used metaphors and huge spaghetti diagrams, which satisfies our desire to showcase our own intellect but seldom does it enlighten our target audience.

The real expression of ingenuity is the ability to distill complex ideas into simple concepts that are easily grasped. When we wallow in our own dark complexity we undermine the outcomes of any project we are working on. Our job is not to wring our hands and convince our clients of our deep understanding of the black art, but to find new and exciting ways of illuminating our clients to the value we can deliver. So that means that Business Continuity is simple … but that doesn’t mean it’s easy.
